The Third Federation War

"This was definitely the most brutal fighting in centuries. The Federation wouldn't give an inch to us without making us pay the price. They, however, didn't realize until late in the war that the price we were paying was being paid double by them."
- Fleet Admiral Luca Rio

"There were some people that asked me why I hated war. I looked them over. They definitely were never in the military. So I told them the story of the Invasion of Talon IV. About how I watched 12 MILLION soldiers die all around me. The sand there is still red from the blood. For the first time in my life, on that planet… on that planet I was scared. I actually thought I would never survive."
- Emperor IX

Overview

The Third Federation War came at the peak of hostilities between the Empire and Federation. The latter attacked the Galactic Games, setting off a nuclear device that killed millions of civilians. At this time the Empire was the military hegemony of Andromeda while the Federation was slipping into economic failure. The war was an act of desperation.

Opening Moves

Venak V

Battle of Venak V - Decisive Anean Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire Rear Admiral Rio ~200,000 ~120,000 ~420,000,000
The Galactic Federation General Schappach ~2,000,000 ~2,000,000 20

The Battle of Venak began with a large invasion. Unlike most Federation attacks, there wasn't a major orbital bombardment beforehand. The small defense force on the planet, however, was caught off guard and forced to retreat. The retreat caused the majority of casualties on the planet. What saved what was left of the soldiers was a blizzard that stopped the Federation while the Aneans kept moving.

Rio, arriving with 20,000 soldiers as reinforcements, rallied what was left of the soldiers and began to push forward using the blizzard to surround the invading forces. Combined with a counter bombardment from the fleet above, the Federation morale was broken. Under orders from Rio, the AGF rounded up the survivors and executed them all. She didn't have the time to deal with moving prisoners to the camps, not when the Empire was at war.

Fan-Kui IV

Battle of Fan-Kui IV - Temporary Federation Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire Colonel Allum 50,000 4,000 ~45,000,000
The Galactic Federation Colonel Torralva 200,000 150 0

Fan-Kui, one of the main Anean worlds in the Rim, was one of the easiest battles for the Federation, and the Empire, during the first attacks. Fan-Kui's warships were away on patrol and gave the Federation a window to drop the soldiers on the surface. Colonel Allum, whom had collaborated with the Federation, handed the planet over to them. When the warships returned a day later, the Federation warships were forced to retreat and the soldiers on the ground surrendered.

Remnora X

Battle of Remnora X - Close Anean Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire General Goerges 100,000 80,000 ~110,000,000
The Galactic Federation Admiral Buntain 120,000 90,000 0

Remnora was a space battle. Never did soldiers land on the surface. Instead two large fleets clashed over the planet. It was over in hours, but both fleets took heavy losses.

Haroma

Battle of Haroma - Crushing Anean Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire HDN AI 0 0 0
The Galactic Federation High Lord Admiral Tupin 70,000 69,000 0

Haroma was the only battle of the war that involved solely automated turrets against an organic enemy. The Federation fleet came out of hyperspace at the edge of the Haroma Defense Network. The guns, already commanded to attack Federation warships on sight, opened fire immediately. In just hours, the AI controlling the HDN wiped out most of the Federation fleet.

Counterattack

Talon Star Hunt

Deep Space Battle - Crushing Federation Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire Rear Admiral Rio ~1,500,000 ~1,000,000 0
The Galactic Federation High Lord Admiral Tupin ~7,000,000 ~3,250,000 0

Following the attack on Haroma, it became known, as Federation forces began to retreat, that they had a capital ship that could deal a severe blow to the Empire. As a result, High Command assigned Rio to locating and destroying the vessel.

After weeks of searching, they finally found its base in deep space. While it was being refueled and resupplied, Rio attacked the ship. Despite what intelligence said about the Talon Star being unable to defend itself while refueling, it singlehandedly destroyed about a third of Rio's fleet. After Federation reinforcements arrived, and Rio lost half her fleet, she ordered the retreat and returned to Anean space disgraced by the failure.

Carnta VII

Battle of Carnta VII - Cadmean Anean Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire Imperator IX ~1,600,000 ~1,400,000 0
The Galactic Federation Marshal Omer Arris ~20,000 Unknown ~450,000

Carnta was the first battles IX personally commanded. While the devastating losses could be blamed on IX, it was mostly the weather conditions that killed the soldiers. With temperatures of -50 and lower, the cold killed the vast majority. The rest were killed by the Federation forces that used the weather, most notably a week long blizzard, to inflict heavy casualties in hit and run attacks.

By the time Anean forces reached the Federation command center, they were demoralized, weakened from the cold and health issues, and were facing a dug in enemy. The resulting battle lasted another week and eventually the Empire won.

Talon IV

Battle of Talon IV - Pyrrhic Anean Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire Imperator IX ~35,000,000 ~32,000,000 ~42,000
The Galactic Federation Marshal Soldavini ~5,000,000 ~1,250,000 ~5,500,000,000

The initial attack on the Talon system was met with a two massive fleets fighting each other. While the fleets clashed, the flagships (the Harbinger II and Talon Star) dueled. In the end, IX was forced to ram the Talon Star. He barely managed to escape the ship before the destruction of both engine cores tore the ships apart. 250,000 Aneans died on the Harbinger.

Eventually the ASF forced the Federation fleet to retreat and the ground war for the Federation capital began. High Command selected a site that shouldn't be too well defended. By the end of the day, they realized just how defended it was. A constant stream of shuttles brought more and more soldiers in. IX went in with the first assault wave of 50,000 soldiers and was the sole survivor of that wave. Wave after wave of soldiers charged at the Federation defenses. By the end of the day, 12 million soldiers were dead. That was the bloodiest day in Anean military history since the First Federation War.

Talon was a horribly underplanned offensive. Anean military intelligence led the AGF and IX to believe that the planet had minimal resistance. Instead the two months of the Talon Campaign became a bloodbath. The Federation had countless advantages over the Aneans, though they didn't have the manpower to hold the advance. In two months, 32 million died from various causes, mostly battle.

Talon was labelled a crushing Anean victory in order to keep approval of the war high, but in reality, if there was another battle like that, the Empire would have been unable to keep fighting.

Closing Moves

Sol III

Battle of New Gracaria - Crushing Federation Victory
Nation Commander Number of Soldiers Military Losses Civilian Losses
The Anean Star Empire Colonel Nakhi Welhan 2,500 2,000 ~5,000
Colony of Aluez General Tod Vlodovic Unknown Unknown 0
Confederacy of Aatuylva Unknown Unknown Unknown 0
The Galactic Federation High Lord Admiral Tupin 200,000 1,500 0

As the war came to an end, High Lord Admiral Tupin went against orders to stay on the defensive and launched an attack on the Empire's only extragalactic colony. In the middle of the night, the Federation forces dropped into New Gracaria, following an EMP blast, and broke AGF forces defending the island within hours.

What resulted was a short guerilla war that failed.
